本届比赛的赛制和以往有所不同，不再进行洲际杯比赛，参赛队由六大洲冠军以及2012年团体世乒赛成绩靠前的六支队伍共12支球队组成，首先分为四个小组进行小组循环赛，每组前两名出线。随后出线的八支队伍再进行淘汰赛，直至决出最后的冠军。
