late 1980's and early 1990's, i started playing ping pong for excercise. i played ping pong when i was at elementary school in china before cultural revolution years. so i had some basics. after a few years i got out of school and worked in a usa company, my body was getting fatter and fatter. ate a lot, no exercise. one day i was called by someone to play pick up basketball games, then i realized how poor my health condition was. i had hard time to keep myself in the game, and felt like passing out. so i decided to do exercise regularly. one of my friend who is also a good pingpong player, happened to tell me then  that there were several chinese graduate students doing pingpong regularly at univ of pennsylvinia. i was so glad to join them around year 1988 or so. i used duble happiness pf-4 and friendship 729 interchangeablly and other players also used chinese blades and rubbers. one hong kong student, lau, used pips-out, DH 652. we played there for a couple of years and felt our paddles ok. in early 1990's, we were introduced to some philadelphia local players. they played better than us. they are either looping both hands or chop/loop combination. they all used japanese equipments, from ball, to blade, rubber, and tables. by then i started feeling my chinese rubber was too slow and too weak, compared to butterfly, yasaka, donic and stiga. my smash could hardly put the ball through. since all of them played away from table, they always seemed to be able to return my smash back. one thing i noticed was that even i had fast smash, but the ball seemed to lost momentum arounf 2-3 meters from the table. that was why they had easy time to return since they stood far away from the table. when they attack, one bullet rip was generally enough to get point from me. the difference is partialy in quality of rubber. i tried their paddles and felt that i could do more powerful smash than chinese paddles. naturally it made me change my blade and rubber, they being butterfly 9000 carbon and donic vario. effect was obvious and sensational. my level of play was like quantum leap.

butterfly 9000 blade is light in weight, but very powerful, hard in ball control. if you get used to it, its block and smash are awfully good. a long time us champ david zhuang used to play with this blade.

donic vario rubber is good for fast attack play, block or smash. it is also good for strong top spin. but hard to control the ball. sensitive to spin. i used this for 2 years, always had problem dealing with spiny serves and top spin loops. however, if u are chinese amature grade 5 or 6+, this rubber is good for u, espencially with reglue. my experience is that this rubber may be better combined with soft wood blade so that you can have more control.
